Advantages and Disadvantages
Being a veterinarian is pretty well balanced - for every advantage there is a disadvantage. Advantages include the pay; veterinarians are one of the highest paying jobs in Canada. Also it is very rewarding to be able to help animals and make a difference in the world. This profession also gives you a lot of flexibility and options- if you don't want to work for someone then open your own office, or if you don't like a certain field then there are many other branches available to choose from. Lastly, animals create hilarious stories that you will bring with you for the rest of your life.
However, there is a down side to this job. The long hours and possible emergency calls need to be considered, and the schedule that comes with this job is often incompatible with family life. This job can also not only be physically challenging but emotionally draining as well; when you are unable to save an animal it can be very stressful, especially if you have a history with the animal. Also, many clients can be difficult to work with and may complicate a simple procedure. Lastly, if you are the owner of your own office then you will have to stay until it is closed, which could turn into a long day depending on the number of emergencies. Being an owner also means you'll have to look after your employees and make sure they are satisfied.
