High School & Recommended Work Experience
It is never too early to start preparing for your career, and high school is the perfect place to start. If you are considering a career in veterinary medicine, but are unsure if it is right for you then taking these courses in high school should help you decide if being a vet is right for you. The maths and sciences are the most important; they are a huge part of being a vet. Algebra, geometry and calculus are the main streams of math that will be used; biology, chemistry and physics are the main streams of science that will be used. Also, computer skills are beneficial to have, because many things have become technical in the past decade.
Any experience you have with animals is great to have on your application, though there are some specific activities many admissions ask to see. The following is a quote from the admissions office at Guelph University: "You should start working or volunteering for a: veterinarian, animal shelter, stable or farm during your high school and university years. you should also keep track of the hours and experiences you have gained at these places and be prepared to elaborate on them when you apply.".
