A veterinarian is a very skilled person, who must have and obtain many attributes and personality traits. The most important trait a person must have for this job is a passion for animals, because without it this job would have no rewards and would be unbearable. Along with that they must have the dedication to keep learning new information, since the world of medicine will forever be changing. Empathy is also important, though they must remain professional, vets can not be cold when euthanizing an animal or when delivering bad news. Being approachable and having good business skills is also essential in this career because people need to be comfortable trusting their pet's health to you. Veterinary school is very difficult to get into, therefore being able to learn and memorize new information will be needed before your career even begins. Other skills that will help in university and throughout your career are time management, data analysis, finding information, measurement, calculations, money math, estimation, reading text, budgeting and accounting, computer use, document use writing and decision-making. The skills you will need are not only mental but physical as well because manual dexterity skills are imperative for this job. Lastly you will need patience; patience with customers, unruly animals; other co-workers and bosses and with yourself because you will not know all the answers and you will have to become aware of that and accept it.
