Related Fields of Study
There are so many different fields in veterinary medicine, which makes choosing one very difficult. A veterinarian technician is the closest profession to a veterinarian, with half of the schooling (about two years). They are trained to work under the supervision of a vet, and usually examine the animal before the vet to get an understanding of the area of problems. Many vet technicians move on to become veterinarians later on in their career.
Another branch of veterinary medicine, that doesn't involve working with animals, is a research veterinarian. This career focuses on finding new cures and updating current medicines, as well as discovering new diseases. Prescribing medication is another aspect of this job, as well as spending lot of time in a laboratory. This job requires the same amount of education as a standard vet, but with at least five years of experience.
A therapy vet is also very similar to a veterinarian, though they specialize in muscles, tendons and ligaments. This profession is usually reserved for horses- especially ones involved with racing- but treating dogs and other livestock is becoming more popular. Therapeutic pools, acupuncture, tread mills and massages are the different aspects used in veterinary therapy. This method of treatment is not very popular because many people prefer to go to a regular vet for simple medication to help their animal, so jobs are scarce.
Zoology is a totally different field, however a zoologist has many of the same responsibilities as a veterinarian. Instead of providing medical care, zoologists study animals and their behaviours. Though many have a veterinary degree because it helps to get a job in this field. This job contains a lot of research and giving presentations- in fact many move on to become professors for this subject.
